“Western Boys And Girls” - Farewell Continental

Genre: Indie Rock

To fans of Motion City Soundtrack, it may not have been apparent that singer Justin Pierre was involved in this side-project - and that’s forgivable, seeing as: 1. Justin’s vocal style is drastically different from his work in MCS; and 2. It wasn’t officially revealed that he was a part of the band until quite recently. Hence the hefty sunglasses in this video, and various other methods to hide his identity in their other music videos (including a balaclava in one). But to those who felt cheated from this act of trickery, it would be fair to say that the quality music they’re creating is more than enough to forgive him. “Western Boys And Girls” is again a different approach to Justin’s style, as his lyrics actually deviate away from his usual fanfare of emotional heartbreak in MCS and instead commentates on the “various modes of alienation occurring between the sexes”. Call it maturation, or an extraordinary spark of inspiration on his part. The song itself is unbelievably catchy, and kudos is deserved for the sing-along hook that has a tendency to reside comfortably in the corner of your subconscious. The video is just utterly ridiculous, as the band describes it as “a caffeine fueled tirade involving tennis courts and tomfoolery”. All in all, it does promise good things for their album release on the 10th of May - and good times for their following US tour.
