“Empire Ants” - Gorillaz (feat. Little Dragon)

Genre: Alternative

With a lot of people I know, the Gorillaz have been a hit and miss when it comes to people being a fan of their music. A lot of diehard fans will argue that Gorillaz are purely a full album experience, where the whole album should be listened to in order so that the concept, the story, and ultimately the emotional rollercoaster can be taken into full effect. Everyone else will say, “Oh, they’re the guys who did Feel Good Inc. right?”. Well, both are true. The album Plastic Beach is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly (pardon the pun). In fact, it could be considered one of Damon Albarn’s greatest works yet. The concept of the album is brilliant, the songs flow beautifully, and all have their own life to them - particularly this song “Empire Ants”. This song holds itself well among the others, because although it is fairly important to the concept of the album, it could be sold as a single song in itself. The soothing yet depressing atmosphere of the instruments, mixed in with the melancholic lyrics that are landscapes in themselves, build up into a soft yet powerful dance beat that quite appropriately drags itself along to the music. Yukimi’s (singer of Little Dragon) vocal appearance is one to be admired, as she holds herself with a gentle flow that mixes in very well with the music around her.

“Empire Ants” is definitely a song you can kinda daze off to at night. Kudos to Damon Albarn for making this awesome track.
